Three point lighting

Three-point lighting

 Key lighting

The key lighting is the first and usually most important lighting, as it is the primary light source for the scene. The key light is most often placed in front of the subject normally at an angle, so then illuminating one section of your subject. Out of low-key, medium key and high key lighting, low key lighting gives the effect of darker shadows and a minimal amount of whites and midtones.

Fill lighting

The fill light is a less powerful light that sits opposite the key(primary) light. As it is from a different angle to the key light, it fills out any high contrast shadows that the key light creates. It also brings out details in the darkness to affect the mood. There are 7 types of fill lighting: An actual light, reflectors, walls, fabric, flash, negative fill, spill fill.

Back lighting

Back lighting is lighting that sits behind the subject. It is the main source of lighting. This creates creates a certain glow effect at the edges or the back of the subject, it can also be used to add depth into an image or a screen. When its not used properly it can result in overexposure and may produce unwanted shadows. On the other hand, using backlighting may not always be effective. Both natural and artificial light can be used as backlighting, for example sunlight.
